Hey all, today we’re looking at this โ the BlueRetro wireless adapter for the Nintendo GameCube from RetroScaler. This is hardware from RetroScaler, and it runs the open-source BlueRetro firmware. This is pretty cool because it lets you use a variety of controllers such as PlayStation, Switch Pro controllers, Xbox controllers and other wireless controllers you may want to try, and it has upgradable firmware. I got the black one. This is a sponsored video โ I got this from AliExpress, more on them in a bit.
Let’s just open it up. I have not opened this one yet. Inside we get our manual and our adapter. It’s just a little nub of a thing that plugs into our GameCube. Compared with the WaveBird, it’s similar in depth, although much shorter. Let’s take a look โ but first, a word from our sponsor, AliExpress.
I just want to give a big shout-out to our sponsor AliExpress, who provided me with this GameCube controller adapter. Everything you see here has something to do with AliExpress, whether it’s replacement shells for your Nintendo DS, replacement screens for your Game Boy Color, headphones, home automation equipment, or office gear such as this label printer for shipping. Don’t forget you can find a link to this product in the video description below, and you can save between $2 and $15 on orders between $25 and $150. Full details in the description โ be sure to use my code to get those savings. Thanks again to AliExpress for providing me with this adapter, and let’s get on with the rest of the review.
You might be asking, why not use a WaveBird? Well, the WaveBird is a great controller, but some of its downsides: it doesn’t have rumble, they aren’t made anymore, and they’re just getting more and more expensive. So if you want an alternative controller that has rumble, the BlueRetro dongle will let you use controllers you’d normally use for other systems โ such as your Xbox One or PlayStation โ with your GameCube, which is pretty cool.
Let’s start looking at the controllers. This is my Nintendo GameCube, a launch model, and this is the BlueRetro dongle. We’ll put it into port one, turn it on, and see the little light glow. I actually discovered that my 5V line didn’t work on my GameCube’s controller board โ my WaveBird worked fine, so thank you BlueRetro for diagnosing my issue. I had no idea. It also meant rumble didn’t work, because this uses rumble power to function. Okay, it’s all lit up and doing its thing, and now we can pair a controller.
I thought we’d start with a Nintendo first-party controller โ the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. We’ll just pair that; I think we just have to hit the pairing button on the thing as well. It’s paired. Here we are with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and it makes for a great GameCube controller. That being said, this controller doesn’t have analog triggers, so we’re going to take a look at another controller which does โ the Xbox One controller. It’s in pairing mode; put the Xbox One controller into pairing mode โ and it’s paired. One of the reasons I want to try this is that it has analog triggers just like the GameCube โ but are they functional? That’s the question.
I’m back with the Xbox One controller, and it does everything you’d expect, with the added benefit of having analog triggers. If I lightly press โ we’ll just do a little bit of a dribble, like that โ then I can push all the way. If you’re not sold on that, I’ll show you a debug program showing the trigger sensitivity. Here in the debug program you can see, if I lightly push down on the trigger, it goes up and down. We have full analog movement on these triggers, which is perfect. I was actually a little bit worried about that, but nope, full analog support. If you don’t have a WaveBird, this is a great alternative, especially since WaveBirds are (one) old and (two) getting more expensive as time goes on.
This next controller is a bit niche โ the Nintendo Switch Nintendo 64 controller. You might be wondering why you’d want to use this. Well, Ocarina of Time was put on GameCube along with Master Quest, so if you wanted to play that with the original controller it was intended for, you could use this. Put it into pairing mode, push this button here โ same deal as all the others โ and boom, it’s connected. Let’s take a look at Ocarina of Time. This is a Nintendo Switch Online N64 controller, and we’re playing Ocarina of Time, the GameCube version. You can tell by looking at the buttons โ they’re the wrong colors โ but it works perfectly fine and it’s already mapped correctly. The C buttons do what they need to do, the Z button does what it needs to do, etc. If you really wanted to play Ocarina of Time on a GameCube with an N64 controller, you totally can, and that’s pretty neat.
Finally, I wanted to try this Super Nintendo controller for the Nintendo Switch with the GameCube, so I could use it with the Game Boy Player and play some Game Boy Advance games with a good d-pad โ because the GameCube d-pad kind of is awful. Let’s pair this. Put it in pairing mode โ oh, it’s already paired, we’re ready to go. Here I am with the Nintendo Switch Online Super Nintendo controller. Why would I want to use this with the GameCube? Specifically for the Game Boy Player: the GameCube d-pad is awful and the Super Nintendo d-pad is fantastic. It works great with games like this. You have more than enough buttons for Game Boy Advance and it feels great to use โ you’ve got your shoulders, etc. One perk of the BlueRetro software is you can reconfigure the mappings. By default this was A and this was B; I’ve set this to A and this to B because that feels more natural for me when I’m playing Game Boy Advance games on my TV.
That’s three controllers. Now let’s go into some of the more advanced configuration options, such as button mappings. What you see here is the BlueRetro web config. You can access this by going to blueretro.io โ there’s a link below. From this page you can do various things such as configure button layouts and upgrade the firmware, and we’ll be looking at those two features. First things first: let’s go to BlueRetro Advanced Config. You’re going to want to connect to the BlueRetro receiver. Note: you need to put the device into pairing mode; the light should be flashing. Click “Connect BlueRetro” and you should see it in your Bluetooth dropdown menu. In my case it’s “BlueRetro GC” for GameCube. Click pair and connect. Now we can change various configurations, particularly mapping. As I stated before, I used a Nintendo Switch SNES controller and I changed the layout โ SNES controller in, GameCube out โ and as you can see, I changed the button layout to the way I like it. You can change it to the way you like it, which I think is pretty cool. And of course, there’s a wide variety of controllers you can use with BlueRetro.
Another critical feature is the over-the-air firmware update. I’ve already updated, so it won’t tell us we need an update โ right now I’m on the latest firmware. Let’s get to some footage where I had not yet updated. There’ll be a link to the developer’s page on itch.io where you can download the latest firmware. When you download the firmware, you’ll be prompted to donate โ I highly recommend throwing the developers a few bucks, as that ensures continued support of your BlueRetro receiver. Once you have the firmware you can upload it. Here’s the upgrade process โ I’ve sped it up, it can be quite slow. I didn’t really have any issues with this device out of the box, but I highly recommend upgrading to the latest firmware so any bugs you don’t know about have been ironed out.
That pretty much wraps up the advanced configuration options for the BlueRetro receiver. For those wondering, yes it will work with the Nintendo Wii, as long as that Wii has GameCube ports. And yes, it will also work with the Nintendo GameCube adapter for the Nintendo Switch, so you can use, say, an Xbox 360 controller as a GameCube controller in Smash Ultimate if you really wanted to. If anything supports analog triggers โ I think Sunshine does โ you can use this instead of a GameCube controller, which is pretty neat.
That about wraps it up. If you like this device, consider using the link in the description below to pick one up. Thanks again, AliExpress โ you can use my code to save a few bucks off your next order if it’s over the threshold. Don’t forget to look around, check out some of my other videos, like, subscribe, yada yada. I do videos on all kinds of little gadgets, from home automation to retro consoles โ you name it, I do it. It’s fun. See you next time. Bye.
