Hey all, today I thought we’d look at this โ the 2005 winter catalog from Nintendo. I would have picked this up at EB Games or GameStop; I forget if they changed the branding by then. Anyway, the DS has already been out for over a year, the Game Boy Micro is still available, and we’re in that transition period where the Game Boy Advance is on its last legs. This is actually printed really nicely โ kind of a metallic reflective paper, really nice.
We’ve got people in a coffee shop all playing โ oh, they’re all playing PictoChat together. An out-of-focus couple, she’s really engrossed. A GameCube with four WaveBirds โ this guy’s got money, he’s got four WaveBirds. He’s got a Game Boy Micro and he’s gripping it โ no one’s gonna steal that from me, bro. He’s got an SP too. Cool. It’s like a wish list: the hot items are a GameCube, a Game Boy Micro, a DS, an SP.
More wish list โ XD, I actually had that, never played it, and I sold it many years ago for not a lot of money. Regrets. Nintendogs, I have that. Those are the only items I have on that page. Oh, this catalog actually has kids โ I was looking at an older catalog and it was all adults. Here we have some kids having the time of their lives, all playing Nintendo DS. The sister relegated to the back is also playing DS, I think, but she’s not allowed to sit with the boys apparently. This other dude โ I don’t know what he’s playing, there’s no game in there. What are you playing?
A blue DS. “There’s always someone ready to play โ Wi-Fi connection.” He’s got a Tokyo shirt and she’s got an “I love Italian boy” shirt โ that’s very funny. I had Mario Kart DS and I played the heck out of that, just snaked away, had a great time. “There’s always someone ready to play” โ and that’s true, as long as you have a router with no WPA, because the DS doesn’t support WPA. They’re all really engrossed, all playing competitive Smash. They’re really into it โ I don’t know what’s going on with that button pressing.
She’s really happy playing her Game Boy Advance SP โ yep, just SP, nothing that exciting. Game Boy Micro: it fits in even smaller pockets than the SP. Wow, you’re going to scratch up that screen with that button, boy. She’s playing Game Boy Micro. I almost got one of those โ I did not, I decided I didn’t want one because I had a DS. Regret.
Pokemon cards for sale โ Nintendo had taken over publishing of Pokemon cards by this time. Nintendo Power. Whoa, this guy is really into whatever he’s playing โ he actually has a game in his DS, not sure what he’s playing though. Some books, and of course a Nintendo DS with the date of July 2004.
Advance Wars, Nintendogs (everyone loved Nintendogs), Animal Crossing: Wild World โ had that, got bored. The Wi-Fi wasn’t the online game experience I was hoping for; it was quite limited. Oh, does this fold out? Why is this so thick? Oh, it is a foldout. “Get equipped, get connected, play” โ all these games had online play. Same thing on the back, and another Nintendo DS radiating Wi-Fi waves. Very cool โ they really cared about that Wi-Fi connection. Did anyone ever go to the Wi-Fi Connection website? It was pretty cool, I used to check it all the time; it didn’t update as much as I would have hoped.
Metroid Prime Hunters, Tony Hawk, Metroid Prime Pinball, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time โ that’s a fun one, I’ve played it. Nintendo really didn’t let you get this game easily; it was only available on nintendo.com. It was one of those unique quirky games that Nintendo thought, “we can’t sell this in stores,” so it was only from Nintendo directly. Super Princess Peach, golf, Trace Memory โ that’s a game I should probably play. Is it good? I don’t know, I just remember it was something they hyped up. Castlevania. The Sims 2, blah blah blah โ I don’t really care about most of these. Ultimate Spider-Man, SpongeBob, Yu-Gi-Oh. This is pretty much the time period we’re talking about. The Incredibles, Viewtiful Joe, Burnout, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Zoo Tycoon, Lost in Blue, Trauma Center.
GameCube. The Wii isn’t out yet โ it wouldn’t come out for another โ hey, what year did the Wii come out? November 19th 2006. So the Wii wouldn’t come out for another year, and the GameCube’s on its last legs. This guy’s got a platinum one with four WaveBirds โ they know what’s up. Pokemon XD โ never finished that, had it but didn’t play it. Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix โ I got this and was deeply disappointed. The music selection is awful. Who wants to dance to classical music? Just a bad game, bad soundtrack. Mario has so much fun music, and the song selection in that game was just terrible. I beat it but I can’t say it’s something I think of fondly. I thought I’d get in shape from playing DDR โ I did not.
Super Mario Strikers, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Party 7, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars. Missed a page. Marvel Nemesis, Madden โ don’t really care. Ultimate Spider-Man, Peter Jackson’s King Kong. Yeah, this is a system in its dying days. Nothing really that exciting, The Sims 2. Call of Duty on GameCube โ I didn’t know that came out on there. NHL, Pac-Man World 3, Frogger. Yeah, the GameCube’s library is looking a bit dry.
Now we have the Game Boy Advance, also on its last legs โ but did anything that exciting come out? Donkey Kong Country 3, Mario Power Tennis, Dr. Mario and Puzzle League. And of course, Pokemon โ I had this, it was stolen, great. Very sad about that. I’ve tried to repurchase most of my games, but my Emerald was stolen and I’m very sad. Final Fantasy IV Advance โ they don’t have the English translation yet, they’re using the Japanese screenshots. That came out towards the very end. I had V in Dawn of Souls, and fun fact, I only finished V recently. V was my first Final Fantasy โ I played it when I was about 10 with the fan translation and I never finished it until this year. I’m really bad with Final Fantasy games; I love them, I just can never finish them. DK: King of Swing, Dynasty Warriors, Tony Hawk, blah blah blah. Get on the Ball, Dragon Ball. Shrek, Shrek, Shrek SuperSlam โ that’s all the reason to get a Game Boy Micro, isn’t it? System seller. Bust-a-Move, more SpongeBob, Metal Slug. Even the Game Boy Advance is tail-end โ these are the last breaths of the Game Boy Advance.
And that pretty much wraps it up. They’ve got their Game Boy Micro, they’ve got their blue DS, and that wraps up winter 2005. I hope you liked the video. My channel’s mostly product reviews โ I’ll buy things, open them, take a look, demo them; I enjoy doing that. Sometimes I unbox old games and sometimes I look at accessories for retro consoles, such as memory cards, controller adapters, and all that fun stuff. If you enjoy the sound of my voice, I’ll keep yapping and you can keep watching. Like, subscribe, yada yada yada, and I’ll see you next time. Bye-bye.
