Hey all, I’m back with another Zigbee device. This time it’s a remote control. What’s inside the box? Let’s pull it out. We get a manual, the remote itself, and a mount — so you could stick this on a wall or somewhere so you don’t lose it, which is pretty cool. It already comes with batteries — there’s a little battery tab, and I’ll pull that out. Oh, that’s an interesting battery. What is that?

It comes with a 23A 12V alkaline. I’ve never seen one of these before. Interesting. We’ll just pop that back in and close it up. So here it is — a Zigbee remote. Let’s go into Home Assistant and see if we can pair it. The instructions say hold button one down for a few seconds and it’ll enter pair mode. Okay, it’s in pair mode and it should show up in Home Assistant shortly.

It would help if I actually enabled permit to join. Okay, I’ve allowed Zigbee devices to join and it’s found it. Took a few seconds, but there it is, with a picture and everything. Let’s see what’s exposed — battery and action. When I press button one, it just says empty string. “Button was triggered” — I don’t know, it just shows empty string. Let me hold it down. It does report something back; I’d have to see the logs.

The actions do get logged. If I double tap, I see “1_double”. If I hold, I get “1_hold”. If I press once, I get “1_single”. So I can use those to get 12 possible combinations out of this remote — 12 different scenes. I could have this turn lights on, turn them off, or dim them. I’m going to go play with it and get it to do something useful.

Here we are in Home Assistant and I’ve set up a few automations. For example, this one plays a fireplace on my living room TV for a single press on button four. I actually had to push every single button on the remote to populate the list — if I didn’t push every possible combination, not every option appeared. I think that’s a limitation of Zigbee2MQTT, I’m not sure, but that’s what I had to do. It worked fine, and I did the same for all the others.

Let’s take a look and see it in action. I’ve set a few modes. If I double tap, it goes into a “watching TV” mode. If I hold, it turns off all the lights. If I press it once, the lights come back on. And this button plays a video for me. Pretty cool.

That’s it for the Tuya scene remote. If you’re interested, there’s a link in the description. Overall, I really like it and I might grab another one for the bedroom. It’s nice not having to yell at my voice assistant every time I want to turn lights on or off — physical buttons are actually pretty neat. I might even have this switch my PC inputs at some point. Thanks again for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one. Bye.
