Hey all, welcome back. Today we’re looking at the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2. If you don’t know, I recently found a PlayStation 2 in the trash and I didn’t have any PlayStation controllers, so I picked this up. It lets me use modern controllers like my Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and my Xbox One controller.
Let’s take a look at the adapter itself. I’ve already unboxed it and been using it for a while. You get the dongle and a USB-C cable — the USB-C port is only for firmware updates, which you won’t do very often. Mine was already on the latest firmware from the factory. There’s a little button for pairing, and of course it’s a standard PlayStation 1 / PlayStation 2 adapter that comes in PS1 gray.
Before we get into it, a quick thanks to the sponsor. This video is brought to you by AliExpress. Everything you see here has something to do with AliExpress — the replacement shell for my DSi, the backlight screen in my Game Boy Color, these smart home gadgets, this PlayStation 1 memory card, and of course the 8BitDo wireless adapter for PlayStation 1 and 2. You can find a link in the description, along with a code to save up to $20 on your next order. Give AliExpress a try.
Now let’s pair it. I’ll plug it into my PlayStation 2, controller port one, just like that. Push the red button on the dongle to pair, then hold the pairing button on the Switch Pro Controller. It flashes back and forth, then buzzes — we’re paired. Now we can play PlayStation 1 and 2 games with a Nintendo Switch controller. A little sacrilegious, isn’t it?
Here we are in Spyro the Dragon on PlayStation 1. If we walk slowly with the analog stick, Spyro moves slowly; push it all the way and he moves fast. Everything’s working as intended. The buttons are mapped exactly how you’d expect: triangle, X, O, square. When we ram into things, we feel vibration in the controller, as expected. Overall it’s a great experience.
It’s not limited to this controller. We can also use an Xbox One controller — same deal. You can play PlayStation 1 and 2 games with your favourite controller. You can also use a DualShock 4, or other 8BitDo controllers.
That wraps up this review of the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2. If you’re interested, there’s a link in the description with a code to save up to $20 on your next AliExpress order. Don’t forget to check out some of my other videos, like, and subscribe. See you next time.
